Dear Fellow Consumer,
For years now we’ve been at the mercy of the phone companies, charging far too much for basic telephone service. (And that’s not even taking the hidden fees they charge into account either!)
Greetings, my name’s Brad (that’s me on the right), and I’ll be taking you through our review of the Magic Jack.
(I’ve been working with computers for almost 15 years now, so I like to think that I know a thing or two about up-and-coming technologies.)
Whether you’ve noticed or not, magicJack’s popularity has completely soared over the last couple of years – and for very good reason – the product works, and it works well..
They’ve ironed out any growing pains and have become a company to be reckoned with.
We’re happy to report that the device continues to improve over time, and has been strategically saving consumers thousands of their hard-earned dollars each year. This can be done very easily by replacing your home phone, or by drastically cutting back the amount of minutes you use – both techniques can yield huge savings in no time at all!
Over 10,000 Magic Jack’s Are Sold Almost Every Day
Our consumer reports also show that over ten thousand new customers are picking up a new Magic Jack device each and every day – isn’t that pretty incredible? This is a fabulous indicator that the service will be around for many years to come, and will only continue to improve as the software upgrades persistently evolve. Sounds like a good time to pick up your own MJ, doesn’t it?
What Exactly Is A Magic Jack And How Do I Use It?
The Magic Jack is a small, matchbox-size device that plugs into the USB port of your computer. From there, you can either use your computer’s speakers and a microphone, or a regular hand-held/cordless telephone to make phone calls. The device makes it possible for you to make free local and long distance calls anywhere within the U.S. and Canada. International calls are also available at low flat rates. As you can see below, the Magic Jack is very easy to both plug in, and install:
Magic Jack Is Like A Full-Feature Phone – Except Hundreds Cheaper!
All of the essentials are included when you use Magic Jack – voice mail, call forwarding, call waiting and caller id all come standard. The two major differences are the setup and the price. This newer technology allows the company behind the magicJack to route calls through the Internet, saving you hundreds, possibly even thousands, depending on your current setup.
Almost All Types Of Computers Are Supported (Both PCs And MACs)
Generally speaking, if you’ve bought your computer within the last 5-7 years, you should be all set to run the Magic Jack device and software. Both Windows PCs, as well as Apple MAC computers are fully supported. You can feel free to run the Magic Jack on a desktop computer or laptop, the choice is yours.
magicJack Couldn’t Be Any Easier To Use – You’ll Be Setup & Making Calls Within Minutes
Thankfully, the Magic Jack is a great device for both experts and newer users. The plug-and-play nature of the device is so easy to use that many individuals report having the product up and running within minutes.
Once you finish setup, your magicJack will act just like a regular phone, complete with the usual dial tone we’re all accustomed to hearing.
Other Requirements You Should Know About
Since the Magic Jack device uses the Internet to make call connections, your computer must remain powered on when the phone is in use. However, when your computer’s turned off, the Magic Jack will still receive voice mails, sending you an email notification when you receive a message. While this may add up to a higher electric bill, the savings will totally make up the difference, and more.
Save Big With Magic Jack – Conventional Phone Service Comparison
Real quickly, we’re going to through a common example of comparing the Magic Jack to conventional phone services. Let’s say you’re monthly phone bill is generally $25 a month, which is a very conservative number. Many times, long distance charges and additional fees will also be tacked onto that total, but we’ll leave those off for now to keep it simple.
At $25 a month, you’ll end up paying $300 a year, without any additional packages or fees added on. Magic Jack starts out at $40 for the first year, which includes the device and first year of service. The first year ends up costing you a little more than $3.30 a month! And each additional year after that is only $20, which breaks down to less than $1.70 a month!
That equates to a whopping $260 savings each year when compared to the most basic of phone services – add in the additional fees, extra package costs, and expensive long distance rates, and the average consumer can save up to $500 by making the switch – Pretty amazing, right?

Featured Article: Revealing the Magic of Magic Jack
The end of the telephony monopoly and the arrival of VoIP
As the monopoly on voice telephony suppliers has been broken down, competitive offers from new telephony players have become available. It’s advisable for the consumers to keep up to date with special offers and alternative solutions that can offer them money saving advantages. One of the new services that have received good customer reception are the VoIP telephony solutions that can be accessed from the user’s PC or in some cases, with a special telephone handset.
Into this market for the past few years, Magic Jack has been gaining recognition and according to its creator Dan Borislow, sales in 2008 had already reached 1,000,000 within 7 months of that year. Therefore, the product is definitely considered a serious player in its sector.
What is Magic Jack and what features does it support?
In order to get the maximum benefit (magic) from Magic Jack, the user needs to have a broadband internet access service available. Magic Jack is a small electronic device that fits into the USB port of the user’s computer to which a standard telephone handset can be connected using a RJ11 socket, exactly the same as the traditional wall socket. Phone calls can be made from the phone handset or the computer depending on the user’s choice.
Incoming calls can be received in the same way. The user will receive a Magic Jack phone number that is different from their originally supplied one from the telephone company and will need to make sure callers wishing to reach them use this new number instead. If the phone is not connected at the time an incoming call arrives, the computer program that comes with Magic Jack will cause the computer to “ring”. If the computer is switched off, the call will be diverted to voicemail and the voicemail message will be sent to the user as an email attachment.
Magic Jack is available for all flavors of Windows and also supports the MAC operating system; however Magic Jack is not available for Linux. As mentioned earlier, it is not necessary to purchase a Magic Jack phone as the user can continue to use their original handset. Magic Jack can be used on an analog line when broadband is not available but for quality reasons, this is not recommended. Magic Jack does not support video or SMS text services. Three ways call conferencing is supported, however it is important to take note that the two calls need to be incoming which means that the Magic Jack user cannot initiate a three way conference.
Magic Jack pricing purchase and delivery
Magic Jack works on an annual subscription basis with the additional benefit offered in the form of increased discounts after the first year. The first year’s subscription is $40 and this includes most national calls in the USA and also parts of Canada for free. International call charges and calls to primary tariff numbers are additional and will be added to the subscriber’s bill.
Before deciding to purchase a Magic Jack service package, it is a good idea for the potential user to check their phone usage profile and ensure that with Magic Jack, they are getting the best benefits. While Magic Jack does not publish international call tariffs on its website, this information is reasonably easy to find using the user’s search engine of choice.
Magic Jack offers a 30-day free trial, however this is only available for users with credit cards. Previously, it was possible to use a debit card for the free trial but no longer available today because Magic jack was faced with user complaints about their debit card being charged for a couple of days and therefore leading such users to conclude that this was, in fact, a Magic Jack scam.
This is not true; it is perfectly normal practice, for example when hiring a car for a charge to be blocked on the debit card for a period of time so this is absolutely a normal card issuer procedure. Magic Jack have responded to this problem by offering debit card holders the ability to claim a full refund up to 30 days from the date of receiving their Magic Jack if not satisfied. At the moment, Magic Jack is also currently offering free delivery in the USA.
Installing Magic Jack is quite straight forward, the PC will detect Magic Jack program and launch the installation program, the process is a little lengthy as a number of promotional offers will appear. The user can decide if they wish to take up the offer during installation but they should take note that these offers can still be taken up later so they will not be disadvantaged if they decide to not take up the proposals at installation time.
How well does Magic Jack perform?
The quality of VoIP calls over broadband is generally superior to calls over analog. Most users are extremely satisfied with the quality. However from time to time, the call quality can be poor, this is often caused by network congestion and not by Magic Jack, the best advice is to drop the call and retry. Compared with mobile phone call quality, Magic Jack is definitely performing magic. The user may notice that there is a small amount of voice delay on the call but as the delay is very small, this should not cause a problem.
Users can buy Magic Jack in the USA and Canada, and use Magic Jack when traveling abroad; this is particularly useful when calling home from overseas. It is advisable to check tariffs and rates from the country that the user is intending to visit in order to confirm that the charges will be manageable.
It should be understood that using computer telephony is more complex than traditional telephony and there are more components that can fail. In particular if the electricity fails, it will be important that a back up option is available, for example, having a mobile phone handy is recommended. In addition if there is thunderstorm activity in the area, disconnect your equipment immediately. If the Magic Jack is used in an area where thunderstorm activity is quite frequent, it would be advisable to install electric current circuit breakers.
